Hey FnB’ers, Nick Poole here. As some of you know we’re trying to expand food not bombs to Wednesdays at Paradise Park. This week we’ll be having a rehearsal of sorts in the form of a picnic for ourselves as a meeting to work out logistics. For anyone who would just like to come to the meeting and eat, excellent! We’d love to have you. We’ll be at Paradise Park (on McLeod between Trop and Harmon) this Wednesday, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Anyone who wants to help prepare the food can come by my house between 9:00 AM and 10:45 AM Wednesday morning.
I’m going to be going out on a dumpster mission tomorrow (Tuesday) night to collect food. If you’d like to come with and help out, great! All skill levels are welcome. It’s guaranteed to be a marvelously sticky treasure hunt. If swimming in garbage isn’t your thing, but you’d still like to help out, there’s plenty of room for that too.
If you have any questions, you want to help out, or you’re just feeling lonely, you can reach me at 702-358-2898.
Solidarity and all that,
Nick Poole

Members of the homeless community gathered on December 17 to pay tribute to the homeless individuals who died in 2009 during an annual candlelight vigil. The memorial, which is primarily attended by people who are currently or formerly have been homeless and their families as well as advocates for the homeless throughout Las Vegas, was held at HELP of Southern Nevada, a homeless outreach center located at 1640 E. Flamingo Road. It’s intended to bring attention to and pay tribute to those who die on the streets and illustrate that all lives have value, even those in the homeless community, who often have few people or even no one to mourn for and remember them once they reach the end of their lives.
During the memorial, a list of the names of the 42 homeless individuals who died the past year was read. In addition, members of the crowd were invited to speak. Among the speakers, several people who had formerly been homeless spoke about their experiences on the street and how they eventually overcame those obstacles that led to homelessness.
Food Not Bombs Las Vegas members in attendance included Kelly W. Patterson, Gail Sacco, and Gail’s husband Joe Sacco. During the speakers’ portion of the vigil, Gail addressed the crowd and memorialized Bret Brennan, who died of cancer in November of this year. Commonly known as “Cowboy,” Bret was at one time homeless and, prior to becoming too sick, was a frequent attendee at the Food Not Bombs Las Vegas picnics in Baker Park. She told of how Cowboy proudly proclaimed to her recently that he was no longer homeless and that others should take encouragement from his story to believe in themselves and their ability to rise above their own personal issues.

We had our weekly Food Not Bombs Las Vegas Picnic in the Park at Baker Park today from 10am to 12pm. We had bread, rice, chili, salad, and bananas, with orange juice and fruit punch to drink.
We put some music on the boombox, talked about the city government’s legal maneuvers in cases over their attempts to lock down access to public parks, and talked about the possibility of starting a second weekly picnic. It was a gorgeous day out and a big meal — about 40 people joined in the meal this week. Food Not Bombs organizers Charles, Daniel, Kelly, Dave, Shine, and Nelson were there. Joe brought out hot food that Gail had made, and Gail joined us later during the meal.
Hope to see you all next week!

Hey all,
After a successful series of meetings and some discussion amongst the group, a group of Food Not Bombs Las Vegas organizers — including FNBers Charles, Kelly, Daniel, Shine, Nelson, and Scott — have decided to put on a regular Food Not Bombs Las Vegas organizational meet-up. Currently we are meeting every Saturday at 2:00pm at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in Running Rebel Plaza, at 4550 S. Maryland Pkwy in Las Vegas.
We usually meet up in the back meeting room, with a Food Not Bombs banner at our table to help us find each other. At the meetings we share news about upcoming events and opportunities, do organizing work for upcoming Food Not Bombs events, parcel out new stores that each of us will contact about setting up donations, and report back to the group on how things have been going since the last meeting with the stores we contacted and the other Food Not Bombs projects that we’ve taken on.
If you are interested in getting involved with Food Not Bombs Las Vegas, one of the best ways to start is to start coming to the meetings. Drop in to say “Hi,” meet some fellow FNBers, and we’ll talk about how we can best work together.
- WHAT: Food Not Bombs Las Vegas organizational meet-up
- WHEN: Every Saturday, 2:00pm
- WHERE: Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Running Rebel Plaza, 4550 S. Maryland Pkwy, Las Vegas, NV.
We hope we’ll see you there!

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a grassroots, community-based union representing farmworkers in central Florida, has called on fast food restaurants, grocery stores, and other large tomato buyers to step up and help farmworkers gain a living wage for their work — by agreeing to pay an extra penny per pound of tomatoes that they purchase from large tomato growers, which will go directly to the farmworkers who picked those tomatoes. (The penny-per-pound program costs participating buyers only a quarter for every 25-pound box of fresh tomatoes that they buy — but it could raise farmworkers’ wages by almost two-thirds. In an industry where the average worker makes approximately $10,000/year, and where wages have not risen significantly since 1978, the penny-per-pound program could finally break through this exploitation, and offer many farmworkers a chance to finally win a living wage for their labor.) Since the C.I.W. began its penny-per-pound campaign, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway, and Whole Foods have all signed agreements with the C.I.W. committing to participate in the penny-per-pound program, and to implement codes of conduct requiring their suppliers to respect the rights and safety of farmworkers in their fields. But Chipotle — while promising “Food With Integrity” and marketing themselves to customers as a leader in socially-responsible business practices — has repeatedly refused to sign any penny-per-pound agreement with the C.I.W. Let’s tell Chipotle that we don’t enjoy the taste of exploitation!
In solidarity with Immokalee farmworkers and the C.I.W.’s historic campaign, MEChA de UNLV has called for a DEMONSTRATION TOMORROW (Wednesday, 9/30) 11 A.M. – 2 P.M. in front of the Chipotle location at Maryland and Harmon, across the street from UNLV. Join us! Bring a sign, bring a friend; most importantly bring yourself. Chipotle exploits farmworkers — let’s tell them ya basta!
WHAT: Picket for fair food and the C.I.W.’s penny-per-pound agreement
WHERE: Chipotle Mexican Grill, Maryland and Harmon, across the street from UNLV.
WHEN: Wednesday, 9/30/2009, 11:00 A.M. – 2 P.M.
WHO: Anyone who supports a living wage for farmworkers and opposes exploitation!
Hope to see y’all there!

Food Not Bombs Las Vegas will be holding its next organizing meeting THIS SATURDAY (9/2) at 3:00pm at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in Running Rebel Plaza, 4550 S. Maryland Pkwy. (It’s right across the street from UNLV at Harmon.)
- WHAT: Food Not Bombs Las Vegas organizational meetup
- WHEN: Saturday, 12 September 2009, 3:00pm
- WHERE: Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Running Rebel Plaza, 4550 S. Maryland Pkwy, Las Vegas, NV 89119
The tentative agenda for the meeting will cover our three major projects for the fall: the Living Without Borders activist conference at UNLV, a benefit concert in late November, and expanding to a second weekly picnic in a park.
- Donations and cars: for many reasons (some of them listed below) it’s going to be important for us to organize a schedule of who can do food pick-ups, what stores to contact for donations, and who has cars available for FNB to be able to do its work. If you’ve got a car available for FNB, let us know! If you’ve got time during either the mornings or the early evening when you could do food pick-ups, let us know! If you know anyone who works for a grocery store or a restaurant, let us know! If you can contact the manager or back-room worker at a grocery store or restaurant in town, let us know!
- Living Without Borders, November 7-8. The UCIR Living Without Borders encuentro (conference) is an upcoming community/activist gathering focused on freedom, human rights, and dignity for all im/migrants. This year Living Without Borders will be held the weekend of November 7-8. They have invited us to provide Food Not Bombs food for participants.
- Benefit concert, late November. Food Not Bombs Las Vegas has been approached by a local band which would like to put on a benefit concert working with Food Not Bombs Las Vegas. They’d provide the music and arrange the venue; we’d provide food, and information for anyone who wants it, about our group. The concert would be in late November.
- Project Saturday. Together with working to prepare and build up our capacity for the big November events, we also need to work on expanding our base of donations, volunteers, and cooking space — all of which we can test-run by opening up a second weekly picnic in the park on Saturdays.
- Other outreach opportunities. Any other outreach opportunities that y’all can think of for the upcoming fall! If you know of anything, drop us a line or mention it at the meeting!
If there is anything further that you want to make sure that we discuss at the upcoming meeting, or if you have any questions, leave a comment on this post, or contact me (Charles) by
e-mail or by phone or text at (734) 262-2129. If you’re definitely interested but cannot, for whatever reason, make the meeting, please contact me with some times when you will be able to meet up to touch base.
Let’s get together and get on this. There’s a lot of exciting stuff coming up, and Food Not Bombs Las Vegas has the chance to build a lot of bridges this fall. Hope to see you all there on Saturday!
