Jul 4, 2010: Feeding the Revolution at Baker Park — Sunday, July 4, 2010

Today, Sunday, July 4, Food Not Bombs Las Vegas gathered to celebrate Revolution Day and to hold our weekly Free Picnic in the Park at Baker Park, from 10:30am to 12pm. We had rice, veggie chili, salad, vegetable soup with rye bread, fresh fruit, and banana bread, with juice, water, and some iced coffee  to drink. FNBers Daniel, Charles, Sarita, and Sean; Gail sent along some food. And three new friends we met at this weekend’s First Friday tabling came on down to join us, with some delicious vegan lemon bars. We put on the boombox, talked about the World Cup and local organizing in Vegas, and had a great time Feeding The Revolution. All told, about 25 people joined in the meal at the Park.

This was a special occasion because of the holiday; but we come out to Baker Park every Sunday to share a free vegan picnic, with food for anyone who wants to eat. See you at the park next week!

Jul 3, 2010: Food Not Bombs Las Vegas @ First Friday in downtown Las Vegas, July 2, 2010

Las Vegas Food Not Bombers Sarita, Charles and Brian had a great time tabling for FNBLV at this month’s First Friday in the downtown Arts District on July 2 from 7-11:30pm. We set up an outreach table with banana bread, pastries, fresh fruit, lemonade and iced coffee; we also had handbills to get the word out about our weekly picnics, literature, Food Not Bombs bumperstickers and buttons. Charles did the baking and FNBer Kelly contributed literature and merch.

We got a great response from folks passing by the booth, whether just because they were looking for a bite to eat, or because they knew Food Not Bombs and wanted to know how to get involved here in Vegas. We had a lot of good conversations with friends old and new, and are looking forward to doing more tabling events at First Friday and other public gatherings in the future.

See you at the park this weekend — and at the next First Friday in August!

May 23, 2010: Picnic in Baker Park, Sunday, 23 May 2010 / Happy 30th Food Not Bombs!

Today, Sunday, from 10:30am – 12:00pm, Food Not Bombs Las Vegas gathered for our weekly Free Picnic in the Park in Baker Park. Today marks the 30th anniversary of the first Food Not Bombs action in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and we celebrated with a big meal and some good conversation. We shared rice, chili beans, potatoes, hot salsa, bread, vegetable soup, fresh fruit, salad, and muffins for the meal, with hot coffee, cold water, orange juice and citrus punch for drinks. About 35 people joined in the meal this week. Food Not Bombs organizers Sarita, Sean, Kelly, Charles, Daniel, and Gail came out to meet up, celebrate the occasion, and keep the table from blowing away in the wind.

We had a great meal, and some good conversations about organizing spaces and community support for Food Not Bombs.

We come out to Baker Park every Sunday to share a free vegan picnic with food for anyone who wants to eat.

See you at the park next week!

Mar 4, 2010: Picnic in Baker Park, February 28

Food Not Bombs Las Vegas held our weekly Free Picnic in the Park at Baker Park on February 21st from 10:30am to 12pm. We had rice, chili beans, vegetable soup, sweet potatoes, stewed squash, salad,  banana bread and fruit for the main course, with orange juice and fruit punch to drink.

It was a beautiful day out but a small group. About 15 people joined in the meal this week. Food Not Bombs organizers Charles, Kelly, Daniel, Nick, Vanessa, and Gail were there. It was beautiful and warm as long as the sun stayed out, but with a wind that kept blowing around our utensils. Dogs were walked; we talked about plans for upcoming events; and had a great day in the sun.

See you all this weekend!

Feb 12, 2010: Food Not Bombs Las Vegas caters your picket line (come rain or shine): FNB at the NV Energy corporate headquarters picket, Feb. 9

On Tuesday, February 9, about 200 union workers from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the Culinary Workers’ Union, and the AFL-CIO and Building & Construction Trades Council, rallied in the cold and rain to protest NV Energy’s plans to cancel its union contract with the IBEW and to cut retiree health benefits while the company is making record profits, raising consumer electrical rates, and taking $130,000,000 out of worker’s pockets through tax-funded federal bail-out money.

While Food Not Bombs Las Vegas has no official position on the labor dispute, part of our mission is to support community organizing and protest by providing hot, fresh food to our fellow workers on the picket line. So on Tuesday, a crew of four Food Not Bombs rolled out to set up a table with hot food and fresh fruit for the picketers. Kaleb, Charles, Kelly, and new member Katie (a veteran FNBer from Omaha) handed out free vegetable soup, rice with onions, curried rice with eggplant, vegan green bean casserole, homestyle potatoes, and fresh bananas and apples. (Gail cooked up the soup and the rice with onions, and Dave and Gail’s husband Joe delibered the rice, soup, and bananas.)

We had literature available, but the rain made it difficult to hand it out. Still, we helped warm up quite a few people on the picket line, had a lot of great conversations, made some good connections with local workers and unionists, and got the good word and some good food out. Now if only we had the fundraising to pick up a booth tent…

Food Not Bombs will cater your picket line or protest. Part of the FNB mission is to support community organizing and protest, and if you are planning an event — whether a picket, a protest, a vigil, or an encuentro, if you’d like some fresh, hot, free vegan food (to warm up supporters, to give kids something sweet to chew on, to boost morale, or to just to put on a great community meal), be sure to contact us to let us know about your plans. We’re happy to set up just about anywhere we’re invited!

Feb 6, 2010: Picnic in Baker Park, Sunday, February 7

Food Not Bombs Las Vegas held our weekly Free Picnic in the Park at Baker Park on February 12th from 10:30am to 12pm. We had a big mess of bagels, rice, beans, vegetable soup, and salad for the main course, with fresh fruit and a delicious vegan apple crisp for desert, and orange juice, citrus punch, and fruit punch to drink.

It was cloudy and a bit chilly and started to rain toward the end of the meal. About 25 people joined in the meal this week. Food Not Bombs organizers Kelly, Kaleb, Sean and Daniel were there, and Charles made it back after a month of traveling. Gail cooked the soup, beans, and rice and made the salad, and dropped by later in the meal. Laura made up the apple crisp and had Charles deliver it.

In spite of the cloudy skies, the weather is starting to turn nice, and we had a good chance to talk about the community in the park and anarchist organizing in Vegas. No music this week — but the boombox will be back, with fresh batteries, next Sunday. See you at the park next week!

Dec 7, 2009: Picnic in Baker Park, Sunday December 6

Food Not Bombs Las Vegas came together for our weekly Free Picnic in the Park at Baker Park yesterday from 10:30am to 12pm. We had fresh banana bread, pineapple and melon, bananas, apples, rice, hot vegetarian chili, vegetable soup, homestyle potatoes, vegan green bean casserole,  dinner rolls, and salad to eat.

It was cold outside and a small group of us; lots of people showed up briefly to get some hot food and then left soon after. About 18 or 20 people joined in the meal this week. Food Not Bombs organizers Charles and Kelly were there. Charles brought fresh banana bread, homefries and green bean casserole. Joe brought soup, salad, chili, and rice that Gail had prepared. We put music on the boombox, did our best to keep warm, and talked about anarchist theories and practice on how to defend people’s rights in a free society.

See you at the park next week!

Nov 20, 2009: FNBLV Organizational Meet-Up this Saturday at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf

Just a quick reminder: Food Not Bombs Las Vegas will be meeting up for our weekly organizational meet-up at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf this Saturday, November 21, at our regular meeting time of 2:00pm.

We usually meet up in the back meeting room, with Food Not Bombs literature set out at our table to help us find each other. At the meetings we share news about upcoming events and opportunities, do organizing work for upcoming Food Not Bombs events, parcel out new stores that each of us will contact about setting up donations, and report back to the group on how things have been going since the last meeting with the stores we contacted and the other Food Not Bombs projects that we’ve taken on.

This Saturday, we’ll be talking about our outreach events coming up next week, discussing possible outreach tabling opportunities at music shows and other community events, and working on ongoing plans to open up our second weekly free picnic, planned to take place on Wednesdays at Alexander Villas Park in Las Vegas.
